Last Sunday

Last Sunday when I got home from church I was in the kitchen making my lunch when there was a knock on the front door. I opened it and there were these two girls asking to use my phone. I recognize that it's not a good idea to let strangers borrow your phone but I decided that I would be helpful and just keep a careful eye on what they were doing. So, I got my phone for them and while the one girl tried to make a call I just talked to the other one. Well, nothing happened with her call and when she handed me my phone back I saw why... she didn't realize I had an out of state phone and that she needed to dial an area code. But they left before I noticed that and I was fine with that. So, I went back into the kitchen, made my lunch and then went to sit on the porch to eat it. A couple of minutes later I see a police car drive by. Then a second police car comes and parks near my apartment. One of the police men walked up to me and said, "Have you been sitting out here for long?"

me: "I have been in and out a little bit this afternoon"

officer: "Have you seen two black girls walk by"

me: "Yeah! they just came by my apartment and asked to use my phone"

officer: "Did they steal it?"

me: "no."

officer: "We have been looking for these two girls for a while now. They have been going around to different neighbor hoods and asking to borrow peoples phones and then stealing them. They have stolen enough phones that if you see them please call 911 immediatly!"

So, I was very surprised by that! I'm so lucky that my phone didn't get stolen. My neighbors did though so they weren't too happy. The police man came back later and asked me a couple more questions and I gave him the number that they tried to call.

Well a couple of days later I was at the hospital working in room service. In the morning when we deliver patients their breakfast trays we bring them the newspaper as well. Well, while riding in the elevator I decided to look at the paper and this is what I found...

These are the girls! I guess they were caught...and not only were they stealing people's phones but they were stealing from stores. The story in the paper goes on to tell about how the lady who is 43 has been stealing stuff since she was 15 and that the stores are to blame because they make the stuff too easy to steal.

Pops

Last Monday for FHE we went to Pops. It's a gas station on Route 66 that is also a "soda ranch". It has every kind of soda you can imagine...and they are all in glass bottles.

It was so fun to look around there at all of them. They have them divided up by the color of the soda...here are some of the crazy ones I found.

Ok so the Sarsaparilla is not that unique but it reminded me of all those half-days at school when we would walk over to Mother Mae's and get one. 

Outside of the building there is a giant soda bottle that is lit up.

My Apartment

I'm finally all moved into my apartment! I have unpacked, organized and decorated. Here is a video tour of my place...

Oklahoma Weather

Ever since I have been here it has been HOT! I think the high of the day has been averaging around 104... and it is humid here. I thought that this was just normal oklahoma weather but I guess that it has been hotter lately then usual. Not only has it been hot but it has also been very dry here. Before this week I think it has only rained once since I got here. So, last week our stake presidency sent and e-mail out to the members, here are parts of it. 

We, as a stake presidency, are mindful of the drought conditions persisting across Oklahoma, and the impact that these conditions, and the accompanying heat, continue to have in this area. We recognize the escalating health issues that accompany this period of excessive heat, particularly for the elderly, as well as the economic impact that the weather is having on agricultural and other businesses in Oklahoma. Based on the most recent NOAA forecast (see below) these conditions are expected to persist or intensify at least through the end of October.

In addition, we ask the members of the Oklahoma City Stake to plead with our Heavenly Father that He ease these conditions and bring some measure of relief to the parts of the country, including all of Oklahoma, that are suffering from the heat and lack of moisture. Please ask your members to fast and pray specifically for this relief this coming Fast Sunday. We believe that as they do so that our Heavenly Father will hear their prayers and accept their fast as these are offered in faith.

 


After reading that e-mail I thought of the story I heard when touring the Brigham Young home in St. George. The pioneers were in a similar condition where they were in desperate need of moisture and reprieve from the heat. So, they fasted and prayed and were blessed with rain. I knew that if Heavenly Father would help them in their time of need he would help us here. Well, on Saturday night it started to rain... On Sunday our stake fasted together and prayed for moisture to continue to come. EVERY single night this week it has rained! And the temperature has cooled down significantly. Right now I am sitting out on my porch and it is only 85...and it's the middle of the day. I am grateful that Heavenly Father has heard and answered our prayers and that I could be here to witness this miracle.

Dallas Adventures!

I went down to Dallas this week to pick up my puppy from the airport. The plane landed at 6:02 so I decided to go down earlier and spend the day with Uncle Mark exploring Texas. When I got there we meet up in Denton at Wing Stop and he introduced me to some delicious chicken sandwiches!! Then we got on the road and headed to Dallas. After quite a bit of circling and many wrong turns we found Cowboy Stadium!! It is very impressive.

When we got there we walked around a bit and then went inside. When we got inside we were greeted by a lady who asked us for our tickets. We told her that we didn't have any... we were just there to see the stadium. She then informed us that you are only allowed inside if you pay for a tour...and the cheapest tour costs $17.50! Well that seemed crazy to us and I asked her if we could just go look at the field... apparently "nobody can just walk around THIS stadium". So we stuck to the gift shop...

 When we got to the airport we started to talk to the man at the cargo desk. We told him that we had just gone to the stadium and he said..."I think that building is the biggest eye sore in the area!" That caught me off guard. I am now dying to go to a game there....It was a very fun day! I'm glad that I have now been to Dallas... ever since freshman year when Karen sent me a postcard of Dallas I've wanted to go.

MY PUPPY!!! and other animal adventures...

I have a new puppy!!!  

The Stapp's decided to give me one of their puppies and I am so happy to have him. He is the sweetest puppy ever. I decided to name him Percy (well the vet decided it...but I like it). He loves to run around and chew on everything! He never barks and rarely whines. Here are some pictures...

Earlier this week my old roommate found a cat outside her door and so we decided to keep him for a couple of days to see if we could find the owner... when we couldn't we took him to the animal shelter.
